Hamburg is an astonishing city. Germany’s second-largest city breathes the air of the open sea: a visit to the Warehouse district and the ElbPhilharmonie at the mouth of the Elbe is a must. City Hall Square exudes a graceful elegance, and from the tower of St. Michael’s Church, you can admire a panoramic view of the port and its surroundings. Hamburg is a city of contrasts. You can stroll through the delightful Altona district, rich in beautiful boutiques and charming restaurants. You can also discover the turbulent Sankt Pauli district and the legendary Reeperbahn, where the Beatles made their debut.

This is precisely the combination of passions that the Hamburg Opera offers in two exceptional evenings. On the one hand, Donizetti’s Marie Stuart, one of the most spectacular operas in the bel canto repertoire, with the immense soprano Ermonela Jaho, and on the other, a recital by Bryn Terfel in which the Welsh baritone sings (and plays!) the full range of human emotions.

Marie Stuart is now a mythical opera. Yet it’s hard to believe that the work was largely forgotten during the 19th century, only to be rediscovered during the golden age of recording in the late 1950s. The two roles of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I were taken by the greatest singers: Montserrat Caballé and Shirley Verrett, Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne. The scenes of quarrelling between the two queens are among the most explosive (and jubilant!) in the operatic repertoire, and Donizetti’s music achieves prodigies of drama and vocal pyrotechnics. This new Hamburg Opera production has been entrusted to the care of German director Karin Beier, and features the presence of the immense soprano Ermonela Jaho. Opposing her, Irish singer Aebh Kelly establishes herself as one of the most promising mezzos of the new generation.

    SUNDAY, MARCH 23, 2025 – HAMBURG

    8 p.m., Staatsoper Hamburg:

THE ART OF SIR BRYN TERFEL

    Bryn Terfel: Tenor

Hamburg Opera’s “The art of” series is legendary. In the past, the Hanseatic series has welcomed Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Grace Bumbry and Montserrat Caballé. Continuing this prestigious tradition, the series hosts The Art of Bryn Terfel concert, in which the Welsh baritone shows the full extent of his talent. The program is full of surprises, including Schubert Lieder, Debussy melodies and British songs. Fabulous Falstaff, immense Scarpia, Bryn Terfel has a radiant voice and a fiery stage temperament. In the intimacy of the recital, the baritone remains a prodigious actor who embodies his texts with an irresistibly contagious enthusiasm.
