History buffs will marvel at Berlin. The German capital has written entire pages of European civilization. Take in the rococo magic of Charlottenburg Palace, admire the Brandenburg Gate, or visit the Reichstag, a landmark of 20th-century history and now a symbol of a remarkable democracy. The Berlin Underground, one of the most emblematic sites of the Second World War, paints a vivid picture of this troubled era.

This new production of The Silent Woman is one of the highlights of the Berlin opera season. First and foremost, it is one of the rarest works by Richard Strauss. Based on a libretto by Stefan Zweig, the opera marvels at its brilliance and virtuosity. But the evening also boasts two premieres: the Berlin debut of director Jan Philipp Gloger and, above all, the assumption of power by the Staatsoper’s brand-new music director, Christian Thielemann, who succeeds Daniel Barenboim. A milestone in the city’s operatic history to experience alongside the Berliners!

This is one of Richard Strauss’s most unjustly overlooked operas. After the death of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the German composer thought his operatic career was over. But it was not until he met the writer Stefan Zweig, with whom he created The Silent Woman. The story is deliberately that of an opera buffa: a man who hates noise marries a woman he thought was silent… Alas, History with a capital H will sweep away this endearing work, since in 1935, the Nazis are in power and Stefan Zweig has already fled because of his Jewishness. Worse still, the show was quickly banned, and had to wait many decades for its true value to be recognized. Conductor Christian Thielemann‘s proposal for his very first show at the helm of the Berlin Staatsoper is therefore a powerful one. German director Jan Philipp Gloger is the ideal choice to assist him. In the title role (one of the most demanding in the entire Straussian repertoire!), American Brenda Rae follows in the footsteps of Natalie Dessay, who left her mark on the role’s history.
