Here’s a city that leaves no one indifferent! Cairo is an unsettling metropolis, bristling with skyscrapers and minarets. It dazzles all lovers of history, architecture and poetry. Cairo is the city of prodigies. What other city can boast a rich heritage spanning seven millennia? The Egyptian capital sweeps you away in an irresistible maelstrom where the Pyramids of Giza rub shoulders with early Christian churches, and where the admirable Islamic mosques unfurl in the urban whirlwind. We invite you to discover this extraordinary, unique and bewitching maze-city.

Of course, we’ll be visiting the indispensable Pyramids and their mysterious Sphinx, but Cairo has many other treasures to offer: its charming Coptic quarter, its medieval citadels and the bewitching Saqqarah Serapium, an ancient complex of underground galleries that have yet to reveal all their secrets. The highlight of our stay was a visit to the recently inaugurated Great Egyptian Museum. This imposing institution, destined to become one of the most important in the world, contains the treasure of Tutankhamen. It’s the perfect place to rediscover your childhood dreams…

Following its opening in July, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has set its sights on becoming one of the largest museums in the world. The figures are already staggering: the museum is two and a half times bigger than the Louvre. But it is of course its exceptional collections (over 100,000 historical objects spanning almost seven centuries of history) that the GEM hopes to distinguish itself. From the monumental statue of Ramses II at the entrance, the collections display some of the finest works of ancient Egyptian art, such as the Solar Boat and the gilded armchair of Queen Hetepheres. The highlight of the museum, of course, is the space devoted to Tutankhamun. In 1922, Howard Carter made arguably the greatest archaeological discovery of all time: what a thrill to see these treasures in their entirety! As well as the mummy, the pharaoh’s funerary mask retains its power to amaze.

To prolong the enchantment of this site, lunch at the Khufus restaurant, which offers an unforgettable view of the Pyramids.

Then it’s time for the excursion that has been a must since the 19th century: follow in the footsteps of Napoleon, Flaubert and Champollion and make your dreams come true. The Pyramids have fascinated visitors for thousands of years. The names of Khéphren, Mykérinos and Khéops resonate like talismans. From the top of its elegant silhouette, the Sphinx questions the meaning of our existence.

FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER - CAIRO

We continue our visit with one of Egypt’s least-known gems. While the Pyramids are universally famous, the Saqqara Serapium fascinates all those lucky enough to visit it. This strange term actually conceals an admirable underground necropolis dedicated to the sacred bull Apis. Built and enlarged throughout the Pharaonic period, this complex of galleries fascinates by its labyrinthine appearance. Discovered by the Frenchman Auguste Mariette in 1851, the granite sarcophagi have yet to reveal all their mysteries.

Lunch during visits.

In the afternoon, we will visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation, which houses almost 50,000 exhibits. “The stars of the collection are the famous 22 mummies of ancient Egyptian kings and queens. When the Museum is inaugurated in 2021, a golden Pharaohs’ parade will be organised to transport (by carriage!) these authentic masterpieces, which were previously kept in the small museum in Tahrir Square. But the Museum also houses some exceptional pieces from periods after Pharaonic Egypt. In a chronological tour, we admire various marvels from the Greco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic and modern eras. All the treasures of Egypt in one museum!

In the beginning, there was the Nile. Few rivers have such a mythical and universal significance. To round off the day, we invite you to enjoy an aperitif on a Cafelluca. The light of the Nile at sunset is divine…

SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER - CAIRO

Let’s embark on another day of discoveries. Saladin’s Citadel is one of Cairo’s jewels. Built in the 12th century, it has protected the city for centuries. The British used it during the Second World War. Next door, the Hassan Mosque is the great masterpiece of Mamluk architecture (the term used to describe the Ottoman presence in Cairo from the 13th to the 14th centuries).  With its fabulous ornamentation and extravagant dimensions, this mosque is the symbol of Islamic Egypt. The more modern Al Rifa’i mosque has the astonishing distinction of housing the tombs of the Egyptian royal family. After being deposed following the revolution in Iran, the last Shah went into exile in Cairo. He is now buried in this elegant sacred building.

Lunch during visits.

Located to the south of the modern city, the Coptic Quarter is one of Cairo’s most attractive districts. There is an incredible concentration of Christian churches (Coptic referring to the Christian inhabitants of Egypt), such as the Hanging Church, the Church of Saint Sergius and the astonishing 5th-century Church of Saint Barbara, as well as monasteries and synagogues (the superb Ben Ezra!). In the district known as Les Chiffonniers, we’ll be following in the footsteps of Sister Emmanuelle, the icon of this unique place.

After a stopover at the hotel, the evening promises to be exceptional. Rue El Moez, whose full name is El Moez Li-Deen Allah Al-Fatimi, will dazzle you. Entirely pedestrianised, it stretches for almost a kilometre. According to the United Nations, it is ‘the greatest concentration of architectural treasures of medieval Islam’. Marvels abound at every step: the minarets of the Al Hakim Mosque (the oldest in the city), the sublime Ottoman El Suhaymi house, the dazzling facade of the Al Aqmar Mosque, the madrassa of Sultan Barquq, the Qalawun mausoleum considered to be the most beautiful mausoleum in the world after the Taj Mahal, and the famous Blue Mosque…The absolute heart of the ancient city, the Khan El-Khalili market awakens memories of old Arab tales. Spices, perfumes, precious stones, carpets and antiques – the stalls are bursting with goods and colourful bustle. Walking through the narrow streets of this labyrinth is enchanting. We will dine in one of the beautiful restaurants in this district (alcoholic beverages are not permitted in this part of the bazaar).

Night at your hotel.

SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER - CAIRO

Breakfast at your hotel and check-out de votre hôtel.

We begin our visit at the city’s oldest mosque, Ibn Touloun. Its monumental proportions and singular minaret make it an excellent starting point. Next door, the Gayer Anderson Museum transports us into the fantasy of a marvellous past. In two old houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, a British military doctor collected unique objects and works of art in the 1930s, which he left behind when he left Egypt. The house, now a museum, offers a superb insight into a refined art of living.
