Vienna’s charm acts like a spell. The baroque interior of the Church of St. Charles Borromeo is a dazzling sight, as is the incredible Gaudi-inspired Hundertwasserhaus. Proof that the Austrian capital has more than one magic trick up its sleeve is a visit to the aptly named Museum of Illusion, which holds many surprises in store. In the baroque decor of the Imperial Palace, a show by the Spanish Riding School is a real treat.

In the evening, the Vienna Opera promises the magic of Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades. This sublime opera, in which omens and love combine brilliantly, promises an operatic event: soprano Anna Netrebko takes on the role of Lisa. At her side, tenor (and husband) Yusif Eyvazov is the ideal partner.

Tchaikovsky suffered from a lifelong lack of self-confidence. Yet, while writing his opera The Queen of Spades, the Russian composer declared: “Either I’m wrong, or The Queen of Spades is my masterpiece! The premiere, on December 19, 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre, proved him right: the performance dazzled audiences in St. Petersburg, and the composer received a laurel wreath on stage. Tchaikovsky’s opera is first and foremost a marvellous story of tormented romanticism. The work tells of Hermann’s descent into hell, obsessed by gambling, leading him to sacrifice his love for Lisa. Tchaikovsky’s feverish music is one of his finest scores. Director Vera Nemirova has cleverly set the action just after the fall of Communism in the 1990s, when extreme wealth rubs shoulders with terrible poverty. But perhaps the highlight of the evening is Anna Netrebko‘s eagerly awaited debut as Lisa, and as good fortune never comes alone, the Russian diva will be accompanied by her city husband, Azeri tenor Yusif Eyvazov, as Hermann.
