Vienna is home to countless treasures. At every street corner, the past resurfaces, as if in a dazzle. The seat of Habsburg power for six centuries, the Hofburg is a monumental complex brimming with museums and treasures. The Sissi Museum is a must-see, containing the clothes, jewels and luxurious private carriage of the famous empress. The Liechtenstein Palace is one of the finest examples of Viennese art, as is the Belvedere Palace, which contains a splendid collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt. Lovers of Art Nouveau will also want to visit the famous Secession Palace, the emblematic building of a rebellious, non-conformist city.

Our tour includes two masterpieces that plunge you into the intricacies of power. Attending a performance of Tosca is always a pleasure, but when Puccini’s heroine is interpreted by Anna Netrebko, you are guaranteed an evening worthy of the legend of the Vienna Opera. The following day, Ludovic Tézier also follows in the footsteps of giants, performing the title role in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. Two great operatic evenings presented in two productions that are among the most successful in the modern history of the Viennese institution.

A wonderful program for a spring getaway
The program
TOSCA, by G. Puccini
SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2026
SIMON BOCCANEGRA, by G. Verdi
SUNDAY 19 APRIL 2026
SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2026 – VIENNA

At the end of the day, at the Wiener Staatsoper :

TOSCA, by G. Puccini

Daniel Oren : Conductor

Margarethe Wallmann : Staging

Anna Netrebko : Floria Tosca

Ivan Gyngazov : Mario Cavaradossi

Christopher Maltman : Baron Scarpia

For the Viennese, this is the ultimate production of Tosca. It may be the Staatsoper’s oldest production (the premiere took place in 1958!), but the show, devised by Margarethe Wallmann, has lost none of its magic. The passionate love story between Tosca and Cavaradossi (thwarted by the cruel Roman police chief Scarpia) is brought to life here in striking images. Puccini’s breathtaking opera (a real thriller before its time!) gains in clarity and direction in this production, never more powerful than when embodied by great performers. This is of course the case here, with no less than Anna Netrebko (a legendary Russian soprano with enormous vocal range) as Tosca and the excellent (and too little-known) British Christopher Maltman, a formidable baritone (and actor!) as Scarpia. In the pit, conductor Daniel Oren deploys Puccini’s orchestral spells like no other.

SUNDAY 19 APRIL 2026 - VIENNA

At the end of the day, at the Wiener Staatsoper :

SIMON BOCCANEGRA, by G. Verdi

Michele Mariotti : Conductor

Peter Stein : Staging

Ludovic Tézier : Simon Boccanegra

Kwangchul Youn : Fiesco

Attila Mokus : Paolo

Joshua Guerrero : Gabriele Adorno

Federica Lombardi : Amelia

For some, it is Verdi’s most beautiful opera. At least, his most profound and dramatic. In fact, the Italian composer completely reworked his opera in 1881, twenty-five years after the premiere, to achieve the lyrical dream he had been pursuing. In this masterpiece, which belongs to the very last style of the composer of Othello and Falstaff, we find perhaps the most beautiful role of the Verdian baritone. As the former privateer who became Doge of Genoa, Ludovic Tézier is quite simply masterful, thanks to an embodiment that closely follows the most minute reflections of a complex character. But in this opera, which includes some sublime duets, the Korean Kwangchul Youn‘s Fiesco is not to be outdone, promising some superb scenes of confrontation. Michele Mariotti, one of the finest Italian conductors of his generation and current Music Director of the Rome Opera, will also be on hand to magnify the sombre splendour of Verdi’s orchestration. Completing the promise of an exceptional evening, Peter Stein‘s staging opts for simplicity to ignite this burning reflection on power.
