In 1782, Mozart finally settled in Vienna! The break-up with Prince-Archbishop Colloredo had been stormy, but the composer had not forgotten his home town. He wrote a serenade in honour of Sigmund Haffner, the mayor of Salzburg. Written on the heels of the premiere of the opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, the symphony impresses with its gushing, imperious force. Mozart is often compared to the classicism of Haydn, but towards the end of his life the Austrian composer developed a passion for the music of Handel, particularly through the opera seria The Clemency of Titus. It is this prestigious lineage that the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Robin Ticciati highlights in this remarkable concert, featuring the voice of countertenor Iestyn Davies in Handel’s sublime Triumph of Time and Disillusion.

How can you resist the voice of Juan Diego Flórez? The Peruvian tenor performs here in a selection of top-flight Mozartian arias. But this concert by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by the excellent Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv is not the only treat on offer, as it includes one of Mozart’s masterpieces for violin as well as Handel’s magnificent Water Music. This ‘music on water’ was composed by Handel for a festival on the Thames in honour of King George I on 17 July 1717. A beautiful summer evening, richly decorated boats filled with lords and ladies and an orchestra of 50 musicians playing on board a huge barge. Almost 300 years later, this masterful music has lost none of its freshness.
