This is an ardently distinctive experience. Burgenland is one of the most remarkable regions in Europe. Located in the far east of Austria, this province (which for a long time belonged to Hungary) first benefits from an exceptional microclimate. With 300 days of sunshine each year, Burgenland has produced excellent wines for centuries, nurturing a remarkable culinary culture throughout the region.

Another distinctive feature of the area lies in the Neusiedler See, a vast steppe lake whose depth rarely exceeds one or two metres. Several hundred species of aquatic birds thrive along its shores. The stars of the splendid village of Rust (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site), storks migrate here each year and build their nests atop the roofs of remarkable Baroque buildings. We therefore invite you to enjoy a stay filled with surprises and discoveries.

In Eisenstadt, you will follow in the footsteps of Burgenland’s most celebrated son: Joseph Haydn. The Austrian composer lived in Eisenstadt, the capital of the region, serving at the court of the high music-loving Prince Esterházy. We shall, of course, visit the magnificent princely palace and the house where Haydn lived, before attending a concert by the remarkable Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by the violinist Julian Rachlin. Framing this unique stay, both upon arrival and departure, Vienna unfolds its treasures and its incomparable art of living.

Independent arrival in Vienna. Independent transfer and check-in at your hotel.

Vienna wins universal acclaim. For many years, the Austrian capital has been ranked as the most liveable city in the world. Ultra-modern infrastructure, a vibrant cultural life, and an extraordinary historical heritage: nothing escapes the former capital of the Habsburg Empire. As an optional activity, we propose a concert at the Opera House or in the legendary Musikverein concert hall, for in the homeland of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Strauss, Schönberg, Berg and Mahler (not to mention Beethoven and Brahms, who spent their lives here). Is music not the true empress?

Day and meals at leisure. La Fugue remains at your disposal to arrange an afternoon of visits with a French-speaking guide or to reserve restaurants.

Optional performance at the Wiener Staatsoper or at the Musikverein (awaiting the announcement of the 2026–2027 season programme in the spring).

Overnight at the Guesthouse Hotel.

Early in the afternoon, walking tour with your French-speaking guide.

Rust is the most charming village in the region. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this small town of only 1,900 inhabitants possesses an extraordinarily rich history.

In 1681, Emperor Leopold I granted the town the status of Free Royal City, in recognition of its importance in wine production. With its excellent restaurants, Rust offers a delightful gastronomic experience. The central square is superb, adorned with beautiful Renaissance and Baroque façades with projecting upper storeys and imposing carved gates.

Among the town’s jewels stands the Fishermen’s Church, whose origins date back to the thirteenth century. Fleeing Mongol troops, Queen Mary of Hungary was saved by fishermen from Lake Neusiedl and later built this church in gratitude. It would subsequently undergo magnificent Gothic and later Baroque enlargements.

In the late afternoon, we shall embark on a cruise across the remarkable geological curiosity that is Lake Neusiedl (whose maximum depth is only 1.80 metres). For centuries, coots, purple herons, great bustards and storks (the true stars of Rust) have made it their natural sanctuary. At the height of the Indian summer, this cruise promises to be unforgettable.

Overnight at the Seehotel.

SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2026 – RUST | EISENSTADT | RUST

Breakfast at your hotel.

Private transfer to Eisenstadt.

At 10:30 a.m., you will attend a rehearsal of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Lunch in a restaurant in Eisenstadt (payable on site).

Early in the afternoon, walking tour of the town with your French-speaking guide.

With its 15,000 inhabitants, Eisenstadt stands as the authentic capital of Burgenland. This charming town boasts an exceptional Baroque heritage. At its heart lies the magnificent Esterházy Palace, the summer residence of this line of Hungarian princes, friends of the Habsburgs, whose golden age took place during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Music lovers are, of course, familiar with Princes Nicholas I and Nicholas II, who were the patron protectors of Joseph Haydn. In 1761, the Austrian composer entered the service of the Esterházy Princes. He was responsible for the music of the court and had at his disposal an orchestra composed of the finest instrumentalists of the time. Within these comfortable yet demanding conditions, he composed works for the baryton instrument favoured by his prince, but also symphonies (nearly 104) of unfailing vitality as well as masses that place him among the radiant flames of the Baroque, the Apollonian balance of the Classical style and the first gusts of Romanticism.

We shall also visit the house museum where Haydn lived in Eisenstadt. Its two floors present an intimate and everyday portrait of the composer’s life (original furniture, personal belongings, musical instruments). St Martin’s Cathedral is another essential site of Eisenstadt, notably for the organ that was eventually built according to Haydn’s explicit specifications. On a charming hill stands the Bergkirche, where the composer rests, together with a remarkable Calvary Hill depicting the stages of the Passion of Christ.

After your visits, private transfer allowing time to rest before the evening.

At the end of the day, transfer to Eisenstadt Palace, within whose walls Haydn’s music first resounded.

Programme not yet announced.

Founded in 1981, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is one of the finest ensembles in the world thanks to its system of co-option among musicians, all of whom are internationally renowned soloists or principal players, and its independent management structure. Among its past and present conductors appear artists such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, as well as, for this exceptional concert, the Austrian conductor of Lithuanian origin Julian Rachlin, himself a distinguished violinist and violist. The full programme has not yet been revealed; yet it is certain that the music of the master of the house, Joseph Haydn, will find no more fitting setting than Eisenstadt Palace.

Dinner in a restaurant near the Palace with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (payable on site).
