Milan is a magical city in winter. Illuminated by the end-of-year lights, the facade of the Duomo is an unforgettable sight. The proud, elegant city of Lombardy invites you to splurge in the luxurious boutiques of the Golden Quadrilateral. With its imposing ramparts, the Castello Sforzesco exudes an astonishing majesty and power under the December sky. Among the castle’s collections, now turned into a museum, is the Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo’s ultimate (unfinished) masterpiece.
The days leading up to Christmas constitute a very special event in the life of Milanese: the inauguration of the season at the Teatro della Scala. From music lovers to politicians, the whole city comes together to vibrate to the rhythm of opera. The season opener is, of course, a new production under the direction of conductor Riccardo Chailly. Having opened previous years with early masterpieces, the Milanese musician now tackles an absolute monument to Verdi’s maturity: Don Carlo. As for the vocal cast assembled for this production – René Pape, Francesco Meli, Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanča? Simply exceptional.
