See Naples and… live life to the fullest! Strolling through the bustling streets of the Quartieri Spagnoli (built in the 16th century during the Spanish occupation) is an enchanting experience. With Vespas zipping through the narrow streets and laundry hanging from the windows, it’s the Mediterranean city of your dreams. And how many treasures are hidden around the corners of the narrow streets: the Gesù Nuovo and the Monastery of Santa Chiara are among the most beautiful religious buildings in Italy. In the splendid Sansevero Chapel, you can admire Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Veiled Christ, a famous sculpture with incomparable drapery. In keeping with Naples’ popular culture, you can finally taste the delicious pizzas and other gastronomic delights of the neighbourhood.

The legendary Teatro San Carlo also promises us a taste of la vie de bohème. Puccini’s opera is presented here in a remarkable production by Spanish director Bárbara Lluch, which was highly acclaimed last season in Naples. Under the expert baton of Dan Ettinger, the pair of lyrical lovers will be played by Kang Wang and Pretty Yende, who finds one of her most endearing roles in Mimi.

La Bohème is a deeply moving melodrama. Premiered in Turin in 1896, it is Puccini’s fourth opera. Surprisingly, Ruggero Leoncavallo also planned an opera based on Murger’s novel, and even more surprisingly, his work (premiered a year later in Venice) was better received than Puccini’s! Very quickly, however, Puccini’s work established itself worldwide and the opera is now an essential part of the operatic repertoire. The libretto tells the story of four poor artists: the poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the philosopher Colline and the musician Schaunard. It is Christmas Eve, and a young woman knocks on the door of Rodolfo’s garret because her candle has gone out. This is the beginning of the tragic love story between Mimi and Rodolfo…

In contrast to so-called verismo opera, Puccini eschews any expressive brutality here, notably through his highly subtle orchestration, which allows him to paint such diverse atmospheres as the Café Momus in Act II and the fog of the Barrière d’Enfer in Act III. Vocally, Puccini’s writing displays all the melodic genius of Italy in a continuous structure from which brief, intense arias emerge. Among the great arias in the work are Rodolfo’s “Che gelida manina” (Act I), ‘Mi chiamano Mimi’ by Mimi (Act I), the duet ‘O Soave Fanciulla’ by Rodolfo and Mimi (Act I), Musette’s waltz ‘Quando m’en vo’ (Act II) and, of course, the deeply moving final scene, which leaves the audience heartbroken with the physical sensation of having lost a childhood sweetheart.  This timeless masterpiece will be performed here in a remarkable production by Bárbara Lluch, whose name is rapidly conquering the world’s greatest stages. Under the baton of Dan Ettinger, a connoisseur of Puccini’s repertoire, the vocal cast promises to showcase the wonderful Pretty Yende in the deeply human and moving role of Mimi.

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Naples

The historic capital of southern Italy, Naples is a city with a strong identity and exceptional heritage. Its historic centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a unique concentration of Baroque churches, palaces, lively alleyways and artistic treasures. Do not miss the Cathedral of San Gennaro, Spaccanapoli Street, which runs through the old town, or the National Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in Europe in terms of ancient art.

Ancient Wonders at Naples’ Doorstep

On the outskirts of Naples, exceptional archaeological sites immerse visitors in ancient history. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the narrow streets, frescoes and Roman villas provide a strikingly accurate picture of daily life nearly two millennia ago. These captivating and moving visits reveal the artistic and architectural richness of Roman civilisation. Other treasures, such as Villa Oplontis and the Phlegraean Fields, complete this unique immersion in antiquity, offering a cultural journey of rare intensity.

Along the Amalfi Coast

Between sparkling sea, hilltop villages and Mediterranean scents, the Amalfi Coast offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a succession of spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, flower-filled streets in Positano, the timeless elegance of Ravello and the authentic charm of Amalfi. Each stop is an invitation to la dolce vita, with local flavours, seaside strolls and cultural discoveries. A timeless place to explore at your own pace, for an unforgettable getaway combining discreet luxury and natural beauty.
