Naples is the ultimate destination. This Mediterranean city stirs up passions: what a joy it is to discover such a wonderfully diverse city! Visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried under Vesuvius in the first century AD, is a thrilling experience. The more adventurous can attempt to climb the volcano, which offers extraordinary views of the Bay of Naples. In the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the cloister of the Santa Chiara Monastery is a splendid haven of peace, with its hand-painted majolica tiles. And how can you resist an evening stroll along the seafront? The sunsets there are enchanting.

Built in 1737, the Teatro di San Carlo is one of the world’s most legendary opera houses. It is in this setting that Massenet’s Werther unfolds its full dramatic force. In Willy Decker’s beautiful staging, Goethe’s romantic hero finds his definitive incarnation in Jonas Kaufmann. His performance alone justifies the trip to Naples, as the German tenor finds one of his most accomplished roles here.

Charlotte’s mother wanted her to marry Albert… But when Charlotte meets the poet Werther, she discovers love, but also suffering. Torn between family duty and the torments of passion, will Charlotte remain faithful to her husband or give herself to Werther? Inspired by Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther, Werther is one of the pinnacles of French opera. Created in 1892, Massenet’s music is deeply moving in its naturalness and the authenticity of its characters. While the role of Werther is moving, Charlotte’s is no less so, with sublime arias such as the Letter Aria and ‘Du gai soleil plein de flamme’ (From the cheerful sun full of flame). Regularly revived, Willy Decker’s production paints a portrait of a repressive society where tragedy lurks. Under the baton of the brilliant young conductor Lorenzo Passerini, Italian singer Caterina Piva finds in Charlotte a role that allows her to fulfil all the promise of her mezzo voice. And then, during this performance, we find Jonas Kaufmann’s Werther. Rebellious, elegiac, with perfect French, the German tenor embodies the brooding hero with extraordinary ease. Some whisper that he is the greatest interpreter of the role in history, which makes us look forward to this evening at the San Carlo with even greater impatience!

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Naples

The historic capital of southern Italy, Naples is a city with a strong identity and exceptional heritage. Its historic centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a unique concentration of Baroque churches, palaces, lively alleyways and artistic treasures. Do not miss the Cathedral of San Gennaro, Spaccanapoli Street, which runs through the old town, or the National Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in Europe in terms of ancient art.

Ancient Wonders at Naples’ Doorstep

On the outskirts of Naples, exceptional archaeological sites immerse visitors in ancient history. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the narrow streets, frescoes and Roman villas provide a strikingly accurate picture of daily life nearly two millennia ago. These captivating and moving visits reveal the artistic and architectural richness of Roman civilisation. Other treasures, such as Villa Oplontis and the Phlegraean Fields, complete this unique immersion in antiquity, offering a cultural journey of rare intensity.

Along the Amalfi Coast

Between sparkling sea, hilltop villages and Mediterranean scents, the Amalfi Coast offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a succession of spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, flower-filled streets in Positano, the timeless elegance of Ravello and the authentic charm of Amalfi. Each stop is an invitation to la dolce vita, with local flavours, seaside strolls and cultural discoveries. A timeless place to explore at your own pace, for an unforgettable getaway combining discreet luxury and natural beauty.
