Naples is authentic and vibrant. The historic heart is full of architectural wonders, but in Naples, the show is also in the street and the plate. Pizzas, stews, babas are just some of the culinary specialties of a city with generous sunshine. In addition to the “Spaccanapoli” artery of old Naples, you can stroll along the seaside, from the Castle of the Egg to the small fishing port of Mergellina. If you don’t have time to visit the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, you can enjoy the wonders of the Archaeological Museum of Naples, a perfect counterpoint to ancient visits. For lovers of unusual activities, the underground and catacombs of San Gennaro (with their early Christian frescoes) will satisfy all desires.

But in Naples, music reigns supreme, and has been since the seventeenth century. There are countless singers who have made the glory of Neapolitan opera, such as Farinelli, Carestini and later Caruso. The vocal cast, imagined by the current director of the Teatro San Carlo, Dominique Meyer, brings together no less than five of the greatest singers of our time. The line-up is simply dizzying: Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Ludovic Tézier and Anita Rachvelishvili! Faced with such a deluge of stars, the work performed could be nothing more than a pretext; this is not the case: Ponchielli’s La Gioconda is one of the masterpieces of the Italian repertoire.

The program
La Gioconda, by A. Ponchielli
April 16, 2024
TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 2024 - NAPLES

At 8 p.m., at the Teatro San Carlo:

LA GIOCONDA, by A. Ponchielli

Pinchas Steinberg: Conductor

Romain Gilbert: Director

Anna Netrebko:  La Gioconda

Alexandre Kopeczi Alvise: Badoero

Ksenia Nikolayeva: The Blind Man

Jonas Kaufmann: Enzo Grimaldo

Ludovic Tézier: Barnabé

During his lifetime, Amilcare Ponchielli was considered the most important Italian composer along with Verdi. Posterity may have been less radiant than for Verdi’s “Busetto’s Swan”, but the fact remains that the opera La Gioconda (premiered at La Scala in 1876) has never left the stage.Inspired by Victor Hugo’s play Angelo Tyrant of Padua, the story is set in seventeenth-century Venice. With a beautiful Italianness, Ponchielli delivers particularly characteristic arias, to which is added the famous Ballet of the Hours used in the cinema in Disney’s Fantasia.

It is a joy to hear an opera whose four roles have so many anthology moments, and it is even more so when these roles are played by an extraordinary cast: Anna Netrebko (Gioconda), Jonas Kaufmann (Enzo), Anita Rachvelishvili (Laura) and Ludovic Tézier (Barnabé)! These immense operatic stars will be directed by veteran Pinchas Steinberg and directed by Frenchman Romain Gilbert with costumes by Christian Lacroix.
