You will live like royalty in Naples. On the impressive Piazza del Plebiscito, you will find the Palazzo Reale, former residence of the Kings of Savoy, as well as the magnificent Galleria Umberto I, whose wrought glass ceiling rivals its Milanese counterpart. History lovers will of course visit the wonderful ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but they can also admire the Villa Poppaea, designed by Nero before the eruption of Vesuvius in the 1st century AD. From Castel Sant’Elmo, perched on a hill, the view is nothing short of unforgettable. With this sublime view of Vesuvius and the islands of Capri and Ischia, it is easy to understand why the Bay of Naples is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

In the legendary Teatro di San Carlo, you will meet an immense empress. Turandot, the fabulous heroine of Puccini’s final opera, is presented here in a thrilling production by Vasily Barkhatov, who restores the humanity of the characters in this lyrical tale set in the ancient imperial court of China. Under the direction of Vincenzo Milletari, the vocal cast brings together seasoned Puccini singers: Anna Pirozzi as Turandot, Brian Jagde as Calaf and the delightful Pretty Yende as Liù.

Since its posthumous creation in 1926, Turandot has continued to fascinate opera lovers. Who is this ruthless princess, who will offer her hand to the man who solves her three riddles? A terrible Chinese empress, who does not hesitate to kill her unfortunate suitors with unparalleled severity! And who is Calaf, who falls under Turandot’s spell despite himself, but wins the heart of the cruel regent by sacrificing the love of his fiancée Liù? Inspired by Carlo Gozzi’s original play, Puccini achieves wonders of orchestration and suspended arias, such as the famous E lucevan le stelle. For this remarkable production, Russian director Vasily Barkhatov provides a real ‘background’ for his characters. Leaving behind the splendour of the Forbidden City, we are plunged into Dante’s Inferno. After a car accident, Calaf navigates between life and death and re-examines his existence with heightened acuity. Far from being arbitrary, this vision brings great psychological depth and theatrical truth, which was praised by the international press at the premiere. In Turandot, Anna Pirozzi asserts herself as the great Italian dramatic soprano of her generation, while Brian Jagde (Calaf) and the marvellous Pretty Yende (Liù) have an elective affinity with the transalpine repertoire.

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Naples

The historic capital of southern Italy, Naples is a city with a strong identity and exceptional heritage. Its historic centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a unique concentration of Baroque churches, palaces, lively alleyways and artistic treasures. Do not miss the Cathedral of San Gennaro, Spaccanapoli Street, which runs through the old town, or the National Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in Europe in terms of ancient art.

Ancient Wonders at Naples’ Doorstep

On the outskirts of Naples, exceptional archaeological sites immerse visitors in ancient history. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the narrow streets, frescoes and Roman villas provide a strikingly accurate picture of daily life nearly two millennia ago. These captivating and moving visits reveal the artistic and architectural richness of Roman civilisation. Other treasures, such as Villa Oplontis and the Phlegraean Fields, complete this unique immersion in antiquity, offering a cultural journey of rare intensity.

Along the Amalfi Coast

Between sparkling sea, hilltop villages and Mediterranean scents, the Amalfi Coast offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a succession of spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, flower-filled streets in Positano, the timeless elegance of Ravello and the authentic charm of Amalfi. Each stop is an invitation to la dolce vita, with local flavours, seaside strolls and cultural discoveries. A timeless place to explore at your own pace, for an unforgettable getaway combining discreet luxury and natural beauty.
