Naples is an invitation to discovery. Few cities can boast such contrasting and sometimes little-known facets. The whole world rightly admires the ancient city of Pompeii nearby, yet Herculaneum, also buried during the eruption of Vesuvius, is just as extraordinary. You can extend your visit to these treasures by visiting the Archaeological Museum, which recounts 3,000 years of the city’s history. The underground passages of Naples also conceal a wealth of wonders. Here you will find streets and avenues laid out in their time by the Greeks and Romans, as well as astonishing catacombs. Strolling through the lively streets of the Quartieri Spagnoli (built in the 16th century during the Spanish occupation) is a constant delight, as is strolling along the Lungomare, the seafront promenade, in the evening, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.

The legendary Teatro di San Carlo presents a relatively unknown masterpiece from the repertoire. Created in 1902, Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur is one of the major works of verismo opera. To do justice to this moving gem, the Neapolitan institution has pulled out all the stops with a superlative musical team: veteran conductor Pinchas Steinberg leads a top-class vocal cast with Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role, magnificently accompanied by Brian Jagde and Elīna Garanča. A wonderful (re)discovery!

Adriana Lecouvreur is Francesco Cilea’s most famous work. The story tells the tragic life of an 18th-century actress adored by Voltaire. The libretto romanticises her rivalry with the Duchess of Bouillon and her love for Maurice De Saxe (played by Enrico Caruso in the 1902 premiere). Adriana’s death is highly romantic: she dies while breathing in the scent of a bouquet of poisoned flowers. For this verismo masterpiece, director Davide Livermore uses multiple layers of visual mise en abyme. The 18th century setting of the plot is very much present, but the Italian theatre director (one of the big names on the current Italian stage) adds the year 1915, with a reference to the actress Sarah Bernhardt during the First World War and a reinterpretation of the sublime Ballets Russes danced by Nijinsky. We can count on the experience of Israeli conductor Pinchas Steinberg and the extraordinary talent of Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role. Since we are at the San Carlo, her partners are splendid: Brian Jagde and Elīna Garanča. Without a doubt, a wonderful evening !

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Naples

The historic capital of southern Italy, Naples is a city with a strong identity and exceptional heritage. Its historic centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a unique concentration of Baroque churches, palaces, lively alleyways and artistic treasures. Do not miss the Cathedral of San Gennaro, Spaccanapoli Street, which runs through the old town, or the National Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in Europe in terms of ancient art.

Ancient Wonders at Naples’ Doorstep

On the outskirts of Naples, exceptional archaeological sites immerse visitors in ancient history. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the narrow streets, frescoes and Roman villas provide a strikingly accurate picture of daily life nearly two millennia ago. These captivating and moving visits reveal the artistic and architectural richness of Roman civilisation. Other treasures, such as Villa Oplontis and the Phlegraean Fields, complete this unique immersion in antiquity, offering a cultural journey of rare intensity.

Along the Amalfi Coast

Between sparkling sea, hilltop villages and Mediterranean scents, the Amalfi Coast offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a succession of spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, flower-filled streets in Positano, the timeless elegance of Ravello and the authentic charm of Amalfi. Each stop is an invitation to la dolce vita, with local flavours, seaside strolls and cultural discoveries. A timeless place to explore at your own pace, for an unforgettable getaway combining discreet luxury and natural beauty.
