We’ve put together a pharaonic Berlin vacation for you. A visit to the Neues Museum is a must, of course, to pay homage to the famous bust of Nefertiti housed there. The splendid Pergamonmuseum takes us back to the time of mythical Babylon, with its monumental Ishtar Gate. But Berlin is also a modern city unlike any other in the world, radiating out from the pleasant districts of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.

On the magnificent Avenue Unter den Linden, the Staatsoper invites the audience to an evening rich in excess. Direction: the Babylon set to music by Verdi in Nabucco. The Berlin institution has entrusted the opera’s production to the remarkable Italian director Emma Dante. But it’s the vocal cast that promises to be of biblical proportions, featuring the great Luca Salsi as Nabucco and the imperial Anna Netrebko as Abigaille.

A legendary performance in every way

Nabucco marks a major milestone in Verdi’s career. Premiered at La Scala in 1842, it was the Italian composer’s first major success. Set in biblical times in Jerusalem and Babylon, Nabucco deals with the fate of two peoples and cultures, but also with the folly of power. Verdi achieves admirable tableaux, such as the famous “Va pensiero” chorus sung by the imprisoned Hebrews, and intense theatrical scenes, full of drama and passion. This new production has been entrusted to the care of the remarkable director Emma Dante. The Sicilian artist, celebrated for her films and plays, is associated with the great French conductor Bertrand de Billy. The vocal cast includes René Pape and Luca Salsi, but of course we’ll only have eyes for Anna Netrebko‘s Abaigaille. The Russian soprano promises a legendary performance in every respect.
